Category:

A spectacular pair of Indo-Portuguese polychrome altar palms, exquisitely carved with floral motifs and finished with gold detailing. Originating from Goa, these 18th/19th century pieces exemplify the exuberance of Baroque tropical design and the elaborate craftsmanship associated with religious altar ornamentation.

Altar palms of this kind trace their origins to Byzantium and were brought to Brazil by the Portuguese in the 18th century to adorn church altars and oratories. Over time, they evolved into highly decorative expressions of wealth and devotion, particularly in the colonial cities of Minas Gerais such as Ouro Preto, São João del Rey, and Sabará. These palms are a fine example of the luxurious artistic traditions of the period.
